Algeria – Strategic Dialogue with Washington in Turkey

Foreign Minister Attaf and US advisor Boulos are exploring economic partnerships and the security situation in the Maghreb region.

Algiers – In the Turkish coastal city of Antalya, Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf and Mossad Boulos, US adviser on African and Arab affairs, met for a strategic exchange. According to a statement from the Algerian Foreign Ministry, the focus was on the “positive dynamics” of bilateral relations. A central pillar of this cooperation is the energy sector. As Boulos announced on the short message service X, progress in talks on unconventional gas reserves was welcomed. Algeria plans to involve US companies more in the development of critical minerals. This development is accompanied by a draft law that will enable foreign investors to have up to 80% equity participation in previously untapped sectors.

Regional security and the Western Sahara issue

In addition to economic interests, security policy was a focus. The interlocutors discussed military cooperation and the joint fight against terrorism. In light of the upcoming review of MINURSO’s mandate by the UN Security Council, the dialogue on Western Sahara becomes increasingly important. Algeria is increasingly using its role as an energy supplier to deepen diplomatic exchanges with Washington. While the US administration has in the past recognized Moroccan sovereignty over the territory, the current meeting aims to achieve closer coordination on regional crises in Libya and Sudan as well as on security issues. The talks underscore Algiers’ efforts to position itself as a stable strategic partner in the Maghreb under new US leadership.
