While Europe is recording unusually mild March figures, large parts of the Atlas Mountains and the Reef are preparing for significant amounts of fresh snow.
Rabat – In a meteorological contrast to the current weather events in Europe, Morocco is facing a significant onset of winter. As the General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) announced in a current weather warning at level orange, snowfall is expected in many provinces of the Kingdom from Tuesday morning to Wednesday evening. Locations above 1,400 meters are particularly affected.
Orange level for the Middle and High Atlas
The DGM forecasts the most intense rainfall for the provinces of Azilal, Béni Mellal, Ifrane and Boulemane. According to the official data from the weather authority, a fresh snow cover of between 20 and 40 centimeters can be expected between Tuesday 6:00 a.m. and Wednesday 11:00 p.m. These regions, known for their importance for local winter tourism and the country’s water reserves, must therefore prepare for deep winter conditions.
Large-scale rainfall in other mountainous regions
The weather event is spreading beyond the core areas to large parts of the country. According to the DGM, snow amounts of 10 to 20 centimeters are expected in the provinces of Al Haouz, Taza, Chefchaouen as well as Ouarzazate, Tinghir, Figuig, Khénifra, Sefrou, Al Hoceima and Guercif. While this rainfall can pose logistical challenges for traffic in the mountain passes, the rainfall is critical to Morocco’s water management as spring snowmelt feeds the dams and groundwater tables.
