Tim David has smashed an unbeaten 70 off 25 balls as Royal Challengers Bengaluru thrashed Chennai Super Kings by 43 runs in the Indian Premier League.
Meanwhile, fellow Australian Travis Head endured a horror night as his Sunrisers Hyderabad lost to Lucknow on the penultimate ball of their match.
In Bengaluru, RCB’s top order reached 3-151 before David launched eight sixes alongside captain Rajat Patidar (48* off 19) as the pair put on 99 runs off just 35 balls for the unbeaten fourth wicket to carry the team to 3-250 in 20 overs — its third highest IPL score.
Put in to bat, Bengaluru made a quick start — Phil Salt (46 off 30) and Virat Kohli (28) added 37 in 4.3 overs.
Salt hit two sixes and put on 56 off 37 with Devdutt Padikkal (50 off 29) for the second wicket.
After Salt’s dismissal in the 11th over, Padikkal added 58 off 21 balls with Patidar as Bengaluru passed 150 in only 13.5 overs.
Padikkal’s dismissal brought David and Patidar together and they took apart Chennai’s bowling.
David was bowled off a no-ball while on 28 runs off 15 balls, but went on to reach 50 off 21 deliveries.
Bengaluru scored 97 runs off the last five overs with David hitting Jamie Overton for 30 runs in the 19th over.
In reply, Chennai was reduced to 5-84 before Sarfaraz Khan (50 off 25) led a middle-order rearguard action, but the five-time champions were bowled out for 207 runs in 19.4 overs.
Bengaluru moved to the top of the points’ table with successive wins and a healthy run-rate, while Chennai slipped to last place in the 10-team league after three successive defeats.
Earlier, Lucknow Super Giants skipper Rishabh Pant led a successful chase with 68 not out off 50 balls as they beat Head’s Sunrisers by five wickets with one ball remaining for their first win this season.
Head (7 off 8) watched opening partner Abhishek Sharma fall for a duck on the last ball of the first over before joining him in the sheds seven deliveries later after popping Mohammed Shami to Aiden Markram at mid-off.
Captain Ishan Kishan fell for 1 in the following over and only half-centuries to Heinrich Klaasen (62 off 41) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (56 off 33) saved them from total embarrassment as the only scores over 14 for the innings as they struggled to 9-156.
For the third straight game, Head was substituted out for his team’s bowling innings.
In reply, Pant hit nine fours in his first half-century of the season, and opener Markram scored a 27-ball 45 as Lucknow finished with 5-160 in 19.5 overs.
Shami was named player of the match for his 2-9 from four overs, including the wickets of both openers from his first seven balls.
