A real Karoo settlement called Middelpos is up for auction in the Northern Cape. The town of Middelpos is located midway between Sutherland and Calvinia on the R354 in the Northern Cape’s Upper Karoo, near the Tankwa Karoo National Park.
Middelpos is a well-known halfway point for both the local farms and Karoo tourists. It receives a steady stream of day visitors and overnight guests because it is the town nearest to the Tankwa Karoo National Park.

After purchasing a portion of the Stinkkuil property from a nearby farmer in 1860, Daniel Tomlinson established a trading business on which Middelpos was founded. Following Tomlinson’s passing, the store was acquired by the Sher family, who provided services to Williston, Sutherland, Calvinia, and the nearby Tankwa Karoo.
The settlement is regarded as one of the few authentic Karoo communities still in existence in South Africa, according to property agency Home & Hectare.
‘With its tranquil, enchanting atmosphere, original character and charm, it retains the cultural heritage of long ago, untouched by modern mass tourism’
– Home & Hectare

The agency described the 103 260 ha of land as offering substantial potential for development in:
Commercial
Residential
Manufacturing
Tourism.
Other amenities with the property include a hotel, shop, town hall, and old post office, along with irrigable land of 4.75 ha.

The auction opens on 21 May at 12, closing 24 hours later on 22 May.
