Let’s get one thing straight: my countdown is based on the goal’s quality and not the moment itself, which is why Maguire’s glorious winner at Anfield misses out. We had a similar issue last season with his euphoric header against Lyon, remember, which was undeniably one of the great Old Trafford moments but not our Goal of the Season.
I’ve got three individual efforts on my list – those impeccable finishes by Sesko, Cunha and Dorgu – but I’m a sucker for a team goal. The clever corner routine against Spurs ranks well, yet the top spot goes to that lightning-fast counter in the derby.
For me, that was Manchester United summed up in 13 seconds of devastatingly ruthless attacking football, with total harmony between those on the pitch and in the stands. Pure cinema of the highest order. We should start engraving the award now…
