Despite official silence from the African football association CAF, there are increasing indications that the date of the prestigious tournament in the kingdom will be changed.

Rabat – Shortly before the planned kick-off of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2026 in Morocco, doubts are growing about whether the original schedule will be adhered to. The tournament was originally scheduled to take place from March 17th to April 3rd, but reports from association circles indicate a significant change in plans.

Media reports signal a departure from the planned March date

As the Le360 Sport portal reports, among others, there are increasing signs that the competition will be postponed to the summer of 2026. The background to this is an informal communication from the CAF General Secretariat to the member associations, according to which an implementation in March no longer appears to be organizationally feasible. While specialized sports media are already presenting the postponement as a done deal, the CAF is still officially silent. Squad lists and preliminary reports for the original date are still being published on the association’s website, which is causing considerable uncertainty among the national teams and fans involved.

Logistical challenges after the men’s Africa Cup of Nations

A key reason for the possible rescheduling is the high strain on the Moroccan infrastructure. Since the country only hosted the men’s Africa Cup of Nations in January and February 2026, the immediate follow-up organization of another major event represents an enormous logistical challenge. In addition, overlaps in the international calendar make it difficult to send players from European leagues, which could affect the quality of the competition.

Sporting relevance for the 2027 World Cup

The final decision on timing will have far-reaching consequences as WAFCON will also serve as the official qualifying tournament for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil. While a postponement to the summer would give national associations more time to prepare, it would require close coordination with FIFA to maintain the integrity of the global schedule. For Morocco, the focus is also on its reputation as a reliable host of major sporting events, while it is already strategically preparing for the joint hosting of the 2030 World Cup.
