A massive low pressure area leads to widespread military deployments and school closures in the northern provinces.

In view of a critical weather situation, King Mohammed VI. in his role as Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Armed Forces (FAR) ordered the immediate mobilization of human and logistical resources. In close coordination with the Ministry of the Interior, special units were sent to the affected areas. According to a statement from the General Staff, these units are equipped with specialized equipment and transportation to ensure the evacuation and accommodation of the population at risk.

Massive disruption from snow and rain

The current weather front is bringing extreme conditions. The General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) issued warnings for large parts of the country. In the provinces of Tangier and Tetouan, gusts of wind reached speeds of up to 90 km/h, while new snow amounts of up to 40 centimeters were measured in the high altitudes of the Atlas Mountains. In regions such as Chefchaouen and Larache, rainfall of up to 80 mm causes water levels to rise dramatically.

Preventive measures in the education sector

The situation in the province of Larache is particularly critical. Classes for 69 schools there were suspended until February 7, 2026 after the Loukkos Wadi overflowed its banks. According to provincial director Mohamed El Baali, around 35,000 students are affected. In order to fulfill the educational mandate despite the floods, the authorities quickly switched to distance learning. The resumption of face-to-face teaching remains dependent on further climatic developments.
