Gasum expands biogas infrastructure in southern Finland to enable cleaner road and maritime logistics through the Port of Hanko
(IN BRIEF) Gasum has opened a new biogas filling station in Raseborg along the Hanko road, offering both liquefied and compressed biogas to support low-emission passenger and heavy-duty transport, particularly for cargo traffic serving the Port of Hanko. The station strengthens Gasum’s expanding Nordic biogas network and contributes to reducing emissions on key transport routes, while the Port of Hanko continues to operate as Finland’s first carbon-neutral port and encourages greener logistics in the surrounding area. With biogas providing up to 90 per cent lower emissions than fossil fuels and now being used on selected shipping routes, the development supports Gasum’s broader goal of accelerating the Nordic energy transition across road, maritime, and industrial transport.
(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 2-Feb-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Gasum has inaugurated a new biogas refuelling station in Raseborg, strengthening the availability of low-emission fuel for both passenger vehicles and heavy-duty transport in southern Finland. The facility is strategically positioned along the Hanko road at Mekaanikontie 10 and is designed to support the growing demand for cleaner transport solutions in the region, particularly in connection with cargo traffic to and from the Port of Hanko.
The station is equipped to supply both liquefied biogas (LBG) and compressed biogas (CBG), making it suitable for a wide range of vehicles, from private cars to long-haul trucks. By expanding its Nordic refuelling network, Gasum continues to build the infrastructure needed to facilitate the transition to more sustainable transport. According to Juho Kurra, Head of Business for Traffic Finland at Gasum, the new station reflects feedback from customers and partners and plays a key role in enabling lower-emission logistics on important transport routes serving the Port of Hanko.
The Port of Hanko is one of Finland’s most significant maritime gateways, ranking as the country’s third-largest commercial port and handling substantial volumes of international trade. Approximately 1,000 heavy vehicles pass through the port each day, transporting exports such as forest industry products and imports including passenger vehicles. Beyond its economic role, the port is also strategically important for Finland’s security of supply due to its fast maritime connections to Central Europe.
The Port of Hanko has achieved carbon neutrality in its own operations, becoming the first port in Finland to reach this milestone. Its commitment to reducing emissions is intended not only to minimize its own environmental impact but also to encourage other logistics operators in the surrounding area to adopt more sustainable practices. Anders Ahlvik, CEO of the Port of Hanko, emphasizes that ensuring easy access for vehicles using different fuel types, including gas-powered trucks, is crucial for the port’s competitiveness and for advancing the green transition in the region.
Biogas plays an increasingly important role in reducing emissions from both road and maritime transport. When produced from organic waste streams, biogas can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90 per cent compared to conventional fossil fuels. Gasum’s expanding network of filling stations across Finland, Sweden, and Norway makes it possible for more transport operators to switch to biogas, including for cross-border logistics.
In addition to road transport, biogas is now being utilized on certain shipping routes, supporting the development of so-called green freight corridors between Nordic countries. This aligns with Gasum’s broader strategic objective to accelerate the Nordic energy transition by providing cleaner energy solutions for road, maritime, and industrial applications.
Gasum is a Nordic energy company specializing in gas markets and sustainable energy solutions. The company supplies cleaner energy for industrial use, combined heat and power production, and low-emission fuels for road and maritime transport, helping customers reduce their overall carbon footprint.
The Port of Hanko, located at Finland’s southernmost point, offers fast connections to Central Europe and serves as a key hub for international maritime transport. The port operates year-round with a strong focus on reliability, efficiency, safety, and environmental responsibility, and its operations are fully carbon neutral.
