Ten people have died in a shooting at a high school in western Canada. Among the dead is the attacker herself. A woman opened fire in an educational institution and then shot herself. The case was one of the deadliest in the country in recent years.
Six people died inside a school in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. Two more were killed at a residence that police say is linked to the case. One person died on the way to the hospital. At least two were hospitalized in serious or critical condition. About 25 people received non-life-threatening injuries.
The suspect was found without signs of life in the school building. Investigators believe she inflicted a fatal wound on herself. Police said there are no other suspects. Law enforcement officers emphasized that there is no additional danger to the population.
Earlier, the police issued an orientation. It described the suspect as a woman wearing a dress with brown hair. The police chief confirmed at a press conference that this was the same woman who was found dead at the school. Authorities did not specify how many of the dead were minors.
Tumbler Ridge is located in northern British Columbia. About 2,400 people live in the city. It is located at the foot of the Rocky Mountains, approximately 1,155 kilometers northeast of Vancouver.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney wrote on social media X that he was shocked by what happened. He expressed condolences to the families of the victims.
In April 2020, a man dressed as a police officer killed 22 people in a 13-hour attack in Nova Scotia. In December 1989, 14 female engineering students were shot and killed in Montreal. The incident then became the deadliest attack on an educational institution in Canadian history.
