The US government under Donald Trump is initiating a new international organization (Peace Council) for conflict resolution, in which the Kingdom of Morocco will play a central founding role.
Rabat – A new dynamic is emerging in international diplomacy. As the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced via the official MAP news agency, the kingdom has accepted US President Donald Trump’s invitation to join the newly created « Board of Peace » as a founding member. This decision marks a significant step in transatlantic relations and underlines the ambivalent realignment of international peace efforts.
A new body for global stabilization
According to the United States declaration, the Peace Council should take the legal form of an international organization. The stated aim is to promote stability and restore governance in conflict areas. The concept differs significantly from classic diplomatic institutions: The Council relies on a “new approach” to conflict resolution, which, according to the US President, is based on practical cooperation and immediate results.
Participation is exclusive and only takes place at the personal invitation of the US President. The fact that Morocco belongs to this group is seen in Rabat as recognition of the “far-sighted leadership” of King Mohammed VI. especially in his role as chairman of the Al-Quds Committee. The kingdom has announced that it will soon ratify the founding charter.
Regional priorities and the administration of the Gaza Strip
A direct reason for the formation of the Council is the situation in the Middle East. Parallel to the establishment of the Peace Council, the second phase of a comprehensive peace plan and the establishment of a “National Committee for the Administration of the Gaza Strip” were announced. This body is intended to act as a temporary interim administration.
Morocco is linking its accession to the Peace Council to a clear diplomatic positioning. The Kingdom reiterated that lasting peace in the Middle East requires the establishment of a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, coexisting with Israel.
Financial hurdles and institutional issues
There is also a structural debate behind the founding of the Peace Council. The body is often seen as a more agile complement or even competition to the United Nations. Critical observers point out that securing a seat on the council in the long term could be linked to high financial hurdles – reports speak of required contributions in the billions for permanent status.
While states such as Morocco, Jordan and Argentina see the initiative as an opportunity for direct influence, European partners such as France express reservations about the weakening of existing multilateral structures, especially the UN.
Morocco’s role as a diplomatic bridge builder
For the Maghreb region, this development means a further strengthening of Moroccan diplomacy on the world stage. Through its close partnership with Washington, Rabat is positioning itself as an indispensable player in security issues. Participation in the Peace Council allows the kingdom to bring its interests in regional stability and economic development directly to a body that claims to resolve global crises through “effective action” more quickly than previous institutions.
